As a public scholar who writes both for other social scientists and the public at large, I am thrilled to be able to help others reach their potential as writers.

Barbara J. Risman, Ph.D. is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She recently ended a four-year term as Editor of the interdisciplinary journal Gender & Society. She has served as Co-Editor of Contemporary Sociology, and as one of the editors of the transformational book series, The Gender Lens. Risman is a prolific author with six books, a textbook in its third edition, and over two dozen journal articles in venues including American Sociological Review, Gender & Society, and Journal of Marriage and the Family. She has written for the popular press with editorials in papers such as Chicago Tribune and The Raleigh News and Observer. She is often quoted as an expert about gender, families, and sexuality in places such as The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, and The Economist. She is a writer for Psychology Today. She has held leadership roles in professional organizations including the Council on Contemporary Families, Sociologists for Women in Society, the Southern Sociological Society, and the American Sociological Association.
